Design a bigger kitchen

Top tips to make your kitchen space look bigger

No matter what size kitchen you have in your home, no one wants the space to look cramped or small. Even with the latest trend of large open plan kitchen, dining and living areas, making your kitchen feel big and look big is a priority for most.

Here are some clever and cost-effective ways to make your kitchen space feel and look bigger.

Add a mirrored splashback

Mirrored splashbacks are a real feature in the kitchen. Here is a project we commissioned where we add a textured mirror pattern for a little contrast which completely opens up the space. The reason behind this was because of the number of cabinets and handles within a small space, the mirror makes it feel and look brighter and more spacious, taking your eye away from the number of cabinets and handles.

Add a mirrored plinth

Similar to the mirrored splashback, a mirror is a great way to make a space look bigger. What you probably don't consider is the plinth and adding a mirrored plinth. This gives the illusion that the floor continues beyond the cabinet and looks great with any flooring shiny or matt. This is also a really cost-effective feature that can make your kitchen look bigger and look unique.

Use lighter coloured cabinets for wall units

This is one of our favourite design tricks and tips. Having the darker units on the lower cabinet runs and having your lighter contrasting units above is a great way to guide the eye and make the kitchen space feel larger. You can make this even more in sync, by having the tall larder cabinets like this design here for a developer, the brighter colours as well.

Consider gloss cabinets

The debate between gloss or matt cabinets is a long one and really down to personal preference and lifestyle. One big benefit of gloss cabinetry is the reflective nature of the doors and how they can light up a space making the kitchen area feel larger than its actual square footage. The gloss shiny cabinets reflect the light from the ceiling to brighten lower areas of your kitchen.
