Revamping your existing kitchen or planning a new kitchen is a big decision. There is a lot of elements that go into deciding your dream kitchen. You need to consider the style, the layout, colour, appliances and overall look that you are trying to achieve.
Our team of designers on average revise their kitchen design over 30 times before getting the perfect space for our client.
So of the many different elements you need to consider, cabinets is the big one. The cabinets set the tone for the kitchen and is often what decides the style and feel of the space.
Well, firstly both are great and can look fantastic in any kitchen. It all depends on your individual style and the look you are going for.
Here are a few of the pros and cons of having gloss kitchens in your home.
Firstly, let’s start with the aesthetics, and with gloss kitchens, it’s all about the modern and contemporary feel. If you like the ultra-modern or ‘new age’ look to your home, then gloss is going to be your ‘cup of tea’.
With hundreds of different colours and options you will be able to find the exact look you’re wanting with gloss. Generally speaking, they are much more popular combined with a handle-less style to give the modern look. Having said this though, gloss cabinets can look great with modern handles so it’s really down to your preference and the space available.
For example, a long bank of units in your kitchen would look fantastic with a slick handle-less style, giving the long straight lines throughout. Whereas if you have an unusual layout or have a small space, adding handles may be the way to go for you. That’s why in most university kitchens where space is at a premium, you’ll see a gloss kitchen with handles.
The most obvious advantage of gloss cabinets is the space factor. Gloss reflects light and this makes your kitchen feel bigger and brighter. This is particularly great when you don’t have a large room to work with so the illusion of space is a big benefit for you.
Cleaning gloss is easy peasy. Because of the surface coating, it’s often just a few minute job to get the ‘brand new’ look. You’ll find most marks and stains wipe off with little fuss. All you require is an everyday non-scratch cloth.
The gloss cabinets are waterproof and can take most liquids and still come up shining and looking great. This would be a big benefit for most families with young children. All those stains and marks shouldn’t damage the cabinets and it only takes a cloth and generic anti-bacterial spray and the cabinets will look as good as new.
This is another reason why you’ll find most university kitchens with gloss cabinets as they are easy to clean and waterproof.
As with most things in life, nothing is perfect for everyone. When picking your kitchen style it comes down to preference and the look you want. However, just as there are real pros to choosing gloss kitchens, there are a few cons that you should bear in mind too.
Yes they are easy to clean but they you’ll find yourself cleaning a lot. We mentioned the benefit of space when the light reflects off the cabinets but there is a downside. Dirt, scracthces and fingerprints are more noticeable on gloss cabinets than they are on matt or semi-gloss for example.
Especially if you pick a darker tone for your gloss cabinets. this is one of the reasons why people opt for a lighter tone of cabinets or have gloss on higher wall cabinets so the ‘little ones’ can’t reach them.
Last but not least is the cost. Gloss isn’t the cheapest option when it comes to kitchens. This is because of the additional gloss coating we have to add to the cabinets. However, it rarely disappoints and the difference in price isn’t a massive amount.
As with anything in your home, it’s down to your preference and lifestyle. There is no right or wrong and I’m sure gloss or matt with both look great in your home.
The main factor is the aesthetics. If you’re looking for a more traditional or classic kitchen look, gloss isn’t going to be the right choice. However, if you’re looking for an ultra-modern and contemporary look, then gloss is a winner.
